This talk presents quantitative approaches for evaluating the adequacy of model validation activities. The evaluation of validation adequacy is a trade-off between available resources and the risk of deploying an inadequate model. Probabilistic validation metrics (e.g., model reliability metric) support such trade-off analysis, distinguish between the contributions of aleatory and epistemic uncertainty sources, and facilitate uncertainty aggregation across the hierarchy of models from microstructure to mechanical properties to performance. For single physics models, validation adequacy may be assessed by the range of tested conditions, and by the convergence of the validation metric with the number of tests. For multi-scale, multi-physics models, a Bayesian information fusion approach is developed to aggregate validation results from tests at different levels of the validation hierarchy, and facilitate adaptive learning to design validation tests. The information fusion approach can also be extended to evaluate the overall model credibility by considering additional assessment activities. |
