| Abstract Scope |
A project was set up at TRIMET Aluminium SE’s Essen works to better understand fir-tree formation in an AA1200 rolling ingot. An R&D DC casting facility was used to investigate various alloy-chemistry and solidification factors affecting fir-tree. This work aimed to see if in the first instance the limits of a pertinent production process could be leveraged; secondarily to establish other useful process data, particularly the mould profile-casting speed relationship. Where a fir-tree occurred, XRD analysis of the Al-Fe-(Si) constituents in the different zones was carried out. This paper details the learnings from this project, including an improvement strategy for the reference case. |
