| Abstract Scope |
In recent years, the AluCLEAN™ refining rod has emerged as a promising alternative to chlorine gas injection for molten aluminum purification, particularly in casting alloys requiring low levels of inclusions and alkalis. In addition to addressing health, safety, and environmental concerns associated with chlorine, AluCLEAN™ can be easily and rapidly integrated into any casting setup. This paper presents comparative results between chlorine gas and the AluCLEAN™ rod in terms of non-metallic inclusion elimination, alkali metals reduction, and hydrogen removal efficiency. Trials were conducted under production conditions by feeding the AluCLEAN™ rod in the first chamber of a commercial degassing unit. In addition to its metallurgical performance, AluCLEAN™ was shown to provide stable and consistent process conditions compared to chlorine. The findings contribute to evaluating the industrial viability of AluCLEAN™ and represent a step in the right direction for aluminium producers aiming to eliminate chlorine from their process. |
