Abstract Scope |
New technologies are needed to rebuild the US primary magnesium industry that can simultaneously achieve environmental sustainability, production scalability, supply chain independence, and economic competitiveness against foreign imports. In this talk, the technology stack that Tidal Metals is testing at its pilot plant in New Jersey will be discussed. First, seawater will be concentrated using membranes to produce a predominantly magnesium chloride brine. Second, Tidal Metals’ patented temperature-swing vapor pump crystallizers will be used to fractionally crystallize magnesium chloride hexahydrate. Third, anhydrous magnesium chloride will be produced using HCl gas drying. Finally, anhydrous magnesium will be melted into an electrolyte and electrolyzed. Comparisons will be made between this new technique with those used historically. Plans for future production will be discussed. |
