| Abstract Scope |
The production of metals is undergoing a transformation with focus on increasing demands for energy efficiency, resource and waste management. These challenges span the entire materials life cycle, from extraction and alloy design with new aims in mind, such as improved processability and recycling for example. A particular shift occurs in metalmaking, from the conventional blast furnace towards alternative solid-state processes. While this pathway offers the opportunity for operations at substantially different conditions and temperatures, they also introduce different reaction mechanisms, kinetic pathways and limitations of the transformation that remain barely understood.
In this talk, we will discuss the fundamental mechanisms and kinetic processes of the oxide-to-metal conversation, with particular focus on the phase transformation and structural evolution. We aim to provide mechanistic guidelines that enable more efficient extraction routes and advance the broader field of chemical metallurgy. |
