| Abstract Scope |
This study investigates the effect of aluminum (Al) content on the passive film characteristics and corrosion behavior of Ti–Al alloys. Electrochemical measurements reveal that Ti–2Al exhibits the highest corrosion resistance among the investigated alloys. To elucidate this behavior, the passive films are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which shows pronounced O 1s peak broadening in Ti–4Al and Ti–6Al, suggesting increased oxygen-vacancy-related disorder within the passive film. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott–Schottky analysis are performed to evaluate the passive film characteristics. Based on the Point Defect Model (PDM), the effective oxygen vacancy diffusion coefficient is determined, demonstrating that oxygen vacancy transport governs passive film stability and corrosion behavior. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the interaction between Al dopants and oxygen vacancies, providing an atomic-scale understanding of passive film stabilization and indicating the existence of an optimum Al content for enhanced corrosion resistance. |
