Abstract Scope |
Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is one of the fastest methods for additive deposition of large metallic structures, but it is known to produce comparatively high surface roughness. This is a result of the parabolic bead geometry and typically requires that additional material is added to the deposited component to allow functional surfaces to be machined to spec. However, it is possible to apply surface correction in-situ to material deposited via WAAM using a plasma arc welding (PAW) or gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) torch. Combined with an appropriate toolpathing strategy, the welding arc can remelt the deposited geometry and potentially reduce machining times and excess deposited material. This work explores the development of resurfacing parameters for 410 SS, which is valued for its high strength and heat resistance. The impact of heat input, toolpathing strategies, and toolpath spacing on decreasing surface roughness are explored using 3D scan data. |
