Abstract Scope |
This study explores the effect of the addition of tungsten (W) to Inconel 718 (IN718) alloy at three different weight percentages, utilizing a V-mixer and planetary gear mixer for thorough powder blending. The mixed powders are subsequently employed to fabricate samples using Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) process, with variations in laser power and scan speed. The as-built samples are systematically characterized for surface roughness, optical properties and microstructure. Results indicate that small amounts of tungsten enhance the energy density required for powder melting, which significantly influences the melt pool dynamics and final part quality. Specifically, the presence of tungsten alters the thermal characteristics, affecting both the surface finish and microstructural features. This research provides insights into the role of tungsten in modifying the additive manufacturing process of IN718, offering a potential pathway to optimize processing parameters and improve material properties for high-performance applications. |
