Abstract Scope |
Space manufacturing has attracted considerable attention driven by increased space competition, debris and private space programs, and the shift towards commercially operated space stations. Space Infrastructure needs production of structural members such as trusses and beams to be made in-space to avoid expensive launches and to build large structures that could not be launched. Producing and transporting from the Earth to set up infrastructure in space is economically unfeasible. This necessitates a contaminant-tolerant metal forming, joining and deposition process capable of handling feedstock in various shapes, forms and purity levels to produce structural elements. In this presentation, we discuss a multifunctional SolidStir® technology, an integrated and modular manufacturing process for Extrusion and Additive Manufacturing with the capability to fabricate multiple end products along with joining, and machining. Additionally, mechanical and microstructural characterization results for structural members produced using SolidStir®, including those from feedstocks with simulated regolith impurities will be presented. |
