| Abstract Scope |
The heat transfer processes in materials play the critical role in the performance and efficacy in a wide range of materials and technologies, from nano-to-macro scales. In this talk, I will discuss how we can probe the scattering rates of individual optical phonon modes as a function of temperature, isolating the role of anharmonicity, defects and interfaces on phonon relaxation in materials ranging from wide bandgap semiconductor nanostructures (AlGaN) to CMOS compatible ferroelectric memory thin films (AlBN). Using infrared pump-probe transient thermoreflectance, I will then demonstrate the ability to probe these optically active phonon modes in the time domain, which, with picosecond temporal resolution, allows for measurement of phonon thermal conductance across interfaces by monitoring the phonon temperature changes via phonon thermoreflectance. I will then discuss how this ability has enabled the excitation and monitoring of plasmon and polariton modes at interfaces, offering improvements in thermal boundary conductance. |
