| Abstract Scope |
Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a promising orthopedic and dental implant material due to its excellent mechanical properties however, its bioinert and hydrophobic surface limits direct bone integration. This work presents two complementary plasma-based surface modification strategies aimed at enhancing the biological performance of PEEK without compromising its bulk properties. In the first approach, plasma/ozone activation was employed to graft PolyNaSS onto the PEEK surface, introducing bioactive sulfonate functional groups that significantly improved surface wettability, cell attachment, and biomineralization potential. The second approach utilized plasma treatment to induce controlled nanoscale crystallinity alterations on the PEEK surface. Plasma treatment generated well-defined surface spherulites, increased surface roughness, enhanced hydrophilicity, and promoted hydroxyapatite formation. Biological evaluations further demonstrated enhanced cellular compatibility and osteoconductive behavior compared with untreated PEEK. Collectively, these studies establish plasma surface engineering as a versatile, strategy for transforming bioinert PEEK into a highly bioactive implant material. |
