| Abstract Scope |
Automated inspection, detection, and repair (IDR) systems for wire-based additive manufacturing (AM) are essential to overcome process anomalies and enable reliable off-world construction on the Moon and Mars. An IDR system capable of ameliorating common AM build defects is being pursued at NASA Langley Research Center. The approach focuses on integrating non-destructive evaluation (NDE) sensors to characterize the targeted defect population after the deposition of each layer. The system aims to automatically analyze the sensor data, triage the defects, and execute appropriate repair strategies. By utilizing different wire-based AM systems and NDE modalities, the modular IDR technology can be leveraged in future autonomous in-space welding and AM applications. The successes and challenges of the IDR technology development process – including AM hardware and repair process improvements; utilization of NDE training data for machine learning; process modeling; and automation – will be discussed. |
