| Abstract Scope |
Resistance spot welding is essential in the automotive industry for producing lightweight vehicles, yet it presents challenges when joining advanced- and ultra-high-strength steels (AHSS/UHSS) due to thermal cycling-induced degradation of their tailored microstructure. This talk outlines key issues, including high tendency for interfacial failures, brittle martensite formation, elemental segregation, solidification cracking and liquid metal embrittlement, while highlighting how physical metallurgy-informed weld cycles can mitigate these defects. Particular emphasis is placed on weld cycle-induced phase-transformations and deformation behavior of third-generation AHSS in similar and dissimilar configurations. The work provides a strategic framework for improving the joining of modern steel grades to enhance vehicle performance. |
