Abstract Scope |
Everybody knows the opening of hundreds of introductions in Mg technology: “Mg is the lightest structural material…” and that it is widely used in automotive, 3C industries and aerospace. The latter is simply not true and the “widely use” is more wishful thinking rather than reality! We will name statements that are often used in publications and, where possible, we will explain why these statements are false under most conditions. We also compare these statements in relation to other commonly used metals and alloys. However, it is necessary that Mg and its alloys get a stronger lobby to increase their use in future applications. This will be one of the important tasks along with performing outstanding science and developing fantastic new alloys and processing routes for numerous applications using Mg and alloys where saving resources and limiting CO2 emissions has become a major and challenging task for a modern society. |
