| Abstract Scope |
Graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a multifunctional nanofiller capable of improving the structural integrity and interfacial properties of polymer composites while offering potential benefits for radiation shielding applications. This study investigates the influence of GO incorporation on the gamma-ray attenuation performance of hybrid flax/aramid–epoxy laminates. Composite plates with a 2A/2L stacking sequence were manufactured under controlled conditions and exposed to gamma radiation from Am-241 (59.5 keV) and Cs-137 (661.7 keV) sources. Shielding performance was characterized by the transmission factor (TF) and mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ) at both photon energies. GO incorporation increased the mass attenuation coefficient from 0.062 to 0.082 cm²/g while reducing the transmission factor from 93.66% to 92.03%, demonstrating enhanced gamma-ray attenuation. These findings indicate that GO contributes not only to the structural performance of hybrid composites but also to improved radiation shielding, supporting the development of lightweight multifunctional materials for advanced structural protection applications. |
