Abstract Scope Preceramic polymers are the precursors to high performance ceramic fibers, ceramic coatings, matrices in ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs), and additively manufactured free-form ceramics. A primary processing challenge for this class of material is surviving conversion without formation of deleterious cracks. This talk explores key failure mechanisms that arise during conversion through the use of in-situ pyrolysis monitoring and post-mortem investigation. These failure mechanisms will be probed with respect to pyrolysis conditions, part geometry and reinforcement type. Furthermore, we will discuss the influence of the material’s physical and mechanical property evolution on surviving polymer to ceramic conversion.
