| Abstract Scope |
The grain refining performance of Optifine Al-5Ti-1B and Al-3Ti-1B high-efficiency grain refiners is compared with that of newly developed Optifine Al-5Ti-0.2B. The reduced boron content of Al-5Ti-0.2B results in lower boride particle addition for a given addition rate, allowing the relationship between particle loading, growth restriction and nucleation efficiency to be examined. A range of addition rates is evaluated across selected wrought aluminium alloy systems to determine grain size response and assess relative refining efficiency. Complementary high-resolution transmission electron microscopy is used to examine particle morphology and provide further insight into nucleation behaviour. The study considers whether effective refinement can be achieved with lower boride particle addition compared with established Optifine products under equivalent treatment conditions. |
