Chloride-based molten salts are promising for advanced energy systems. Reactive metallic species, including metallic fission products and corrosion-mitigating additives, can strongly influence the performance of structural alloys in these environments. Although intermetallic compounds are frequently observed at alloy–salt interfaces, the mechanisms governing their formation and subsequent interfacial evolution remain poorly understood. Here, Zr is employed as a model metallic species to investigate its interactions with Ni, Cr, and Ni–20Cr in molten LiCl–KCl using multimodal in situ synchrotron characterization, including X-ray nano-tomography, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES/EXAFS), and X-ray diffraction. Quantitative image analysis, EXAFS, and diffraction refinement reveal the coupled morphological, chemical, and structural evolution during reaction, including intermetallic formation and elemental interdiffusion at alloy interfaces. These findings establish a mechanistic framework for understanding the evolution of reactive metallic species at alloy–salt interfaces in molten salt environments. |
