| Abstract Scope |
Due to its versatility and precision, Pulsed Laser Beam Welding (PLBW) provides a promising solution for manufacturing and repair in space. These extreme environmental factors found in space affect the molten pool dynamics, requiring a thorough understanding of the structural materials weldability under such conditions. This work evaluates PLBW of 316L Stainless steel under vacuum at cryogenic Temperatures (-150°C). A custom system that incorporates a quasi-continuous-wave 1070 nm fiber laser, liquid-nitrogen cooling, and in-situ data acquisition within a high-vacuum chamber was used. The macro- and micro-structures were evaluated using optical and scanning electron microscopy. In addition to the microstructure, aspects such as weld bead width and penetration, solidification cracking, and porosity were quantified. The extreme thermal conditions had relevant effects on solidification rate, weld bead geometry, and defect formation that will be presented. These findings further add to the fundamental understanding of materials joining in the space environment. |
