High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have emerged as promising candidates for radiation-tolerant materials because their compositional complexity and severe lattice distortion can fundamentally alter defect formation and recovery. However, the effects of different irradiation regimes on defect evolution in HEO have not been fully understood. This work presents a comprehensive investigation of irradiation-induced structural evolution in HEOs under both nuclear energy loss (displacement damage) and electronic energy loss (swift heavy-ion) conditions using advanced electron microscopy. Under electron energy loss-dominated irradiation, perovskite-structured HEOs exhibit discontinuous ion tracks with significantly reduced track diameters relative to conventional SrTiO₃, indicating modified thermal spike dynamics and enhanced resistance to continuous damage formation, whereas nuclear energy loss induces greater structural strain. The results demonstrate that compositional disorder substantially influences defect evolution across multiple irradiation regimes and provide new mechanistic insights into radiation tolerance in high-entropy oxides for nuclear energy and other extreme-environment applications. |
