| Abstract Scope |
Fusion power plants that are fueled by the deuterium and tritium fusion reaction, release 14.1 MeV neutrons. Those neutrons cause both displacement damage and transmutation in the surrounding materials. Transmutation can significantly contribute to material property changes including thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, and swelling. The closest materials to the plasma experience a harder neutron spectrum, while the neutron energy spectrum becomes softer farther away from the center. Thus, transmutation is spatially varying throughout the tokamak and design of fusion power plants requires a close coupling of neutronics modeling and nuclear materials science. Further understanding of material structure and property changes as a function of transmutation level, rather than only with monoenergetic 14.1 MeV neutrons, is needed. Some representative transmutation analysis of the Commonwealth Fusion Systems ARCTM tokamak is shared, with a focus on a structural material and a conductor material examples with comparisons to transmutation in fission test reactors. |
