The strengthening of metallic alloys is closely associated with distortions due to variations in atomic radii and local moduli at the atomic level. While the effects of deviations in atomic radii due to the presence of solutes have been extensively studied and documented, the implications of changes in moduli remain less understood. Previous research has often viewed the impact of moduli as secondary compared to the effects of lattice misfit. This perspective has largely stemmed from measurements that evaluate overall stiffness changes at the macroscopic scale, which is rather modest. However, at the atomic level, variations induced by moduli can be significant and can create conditions conducive to the development of high gradients that are responsible for strengthening. Evaluating the local moduli in metallic alloys is a significant task that requires electronic structure calculations. |
