| Abstract Scope |
Cold spray is an attractive solid-state process for repairing and restoring high-value metallic components. Beyond repair of aluminum alloys for aerospace applications, it is increasingly used for repairing large steel and cast-iron castings, restoring worn steel components, and depositing nickel-or iron-based alloys for improved wear and corrosion resistance.
This presentation highlights recent advances in cold spray hardware and process optimization that enable high-performance deposition using nitrogen across a wide range of repair materials. Mechanical characterization, including tensile, adhesion, fatigue, and microstructural evaluation, demonstrates significant improvements in deposit quality and performance. For AA7050, adhesion strength exceeded 230 MPa, tensile strength exceeded 360 MPa, and elongation exceeded 3.5%, together with substantially improved fatigue life. Comparable advances were achieved for nickel-and iron-based alloys used for repair and dimensional restoration of components, providing a cost-effective alternative to conventional repair methods while eliminating the need for helium in many industrial applications. |
