| Abstract Scope |
The study details the evolution and fragmentation of Fe-rich intermetallic particles during thermomechanical processing of AA8xxx aluminium alloy foil stock produced with direct chill (DC) casting process. Microstructure evolution through the processing stages was examined by characterization at successive processing stages including as-cast, homogenized, hot rolled, cold rolled and final ultra-light gauge (ULG) foil conditions. Quantitative image analysis with SEM-EDX was employed to evaluate changes in particle size, aspect ratio and number density as a function of total rolling reduction. The average equivalent diameter was seen to reduce from 2.5µm to 0.65µm after foil rolling process stage. The processing route was modified by varying the cold rolling reduction, and the resulting changes in Fe-rich intermetallic particle size and number density were quantitatively correlated with pinhole density in the final foil product. Refinement of coarse intermetallic compounds prevent premature fracture during deformation, thereby enhance foil rollability and significantly reduce pinhole formation. |
