| Abstract Scope |
Contact-mode high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) is a scanning probe technique capable of measuring surface topography and properties at imaging rates exceeding 20 frames per second. Measurements are performed with nanoscale lateral resolution and sub-nanometre height resolution. Various imaging modes are available, including electrical or thermal conductivity mapping, stiffness mapping, parallel potentiostatic control, stress rigs, and a heated stage. Imaging can also be performed in ambient, liquid, or controlled gas environments. HS-AFM’s combined capabilities enable a huge variety of experimental set-ups across various applications. The presented work explores applications of HS-AFM in materials degradation studies, including large area precipitation mapping, in-situ localised corrosion studies, and materials failure analysis. Advancements for this technique will also be discussed, including adaptations to the probe tip to enable spatially-resolved electrochemistry. By integrating an ultra-microelectrode into the probe, simultaneous topography and electrochemical mapping is achieved, enabling greater understanding of localised corrosion initiation events. |
