The introduction of excess carriers provides a promising approach for controlling the mechanical properties of materials. Although electron-beam irradiation has been reported to significantly enhance the fracture toughness of amorphous silica, the governing factor remains unclear. The objective of this study is to identify the governing factor responsible for this enhancement. We established a quantitative method for evaluating excess carriers using voltage-contrast (VC) observations. VC observations and fracture toughness tests were performed on amorphous silica micro-specimens prepared under different irradiation currents Ip and elapsed times after irradiation t. The excess electron concentration De increased with increasing Ip and decreased with increasing t. The fracture toughness Kc was uniquely correlated with De, indicating that it is governed by excess electron concentration rather than irradiation conditions. Furthermore, fracture toughness increased by up to a factor of 4.4, exhibiting a nonlinear dependence on De reminiscent of a brittle-to-ductile transition. |
