Abstract Scope |
Many load-bearing aerospace components are manufactured by forging. However, high performance requirements and small-scale production present challenges to the industry, resulting in high costs and long lead times. A promising hybrid approach combines metal additive manufacturing with traditional forging operations to eliminate many forging steps and accelerate production. We fabricated Inconel 718 and 316L stainless steel parts by laser powder bed fusion and wire-arc additive manufacturing methods and studied their hot forging behavior. We observed significant heterogeneity in grain morphology, mechanical response, and defect distribution within the as-built materials. Materials’ response to hot forging conditions included complex, strain-rate-dependent deformation and recrystallization. These characteristics play a crucial role in shaping material response to downstream processing and performance. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of process-structure-property relationships, enabling the refinement of post-processing strategies to enhance component performance and ensure structural reliability in service. |
