Abstract Scope |
Advanced nuclear systems expose structural materials to extreme coupled environments, where radiation damage and corrosive media—such as liquid metals and molten salts—act simultaneously. These interactions can produce synergistic degradation mechanisms that are not predictable from independent studies of irradiation or corrosion alone. This work aims to investigate the effects of coupled environments such as irradiation-enhanced corrosion, focusing on how displacement damage, defect evolution, and surface chemistry may affect each other. Using a combination of ion beam irradiation, corrosion testing (oxidating and non oxidizing environment), and characterization, we explore model materials exposed to lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE), air and fluoride/chloride salts under nuclear-relevant conditions. Understanding these coupled effects is critical for designing radiation-tolerant, corrosion-resistant materials in Gen-IV reactors and fusion systems. This study informs material selection and lifetime prediction in harsh, multi-stressor environments. |
