Advancing the Science of Materials for Extreme Environments: William Fahrenholtz1; 1Missouri University of Science and Technology
This presentation will highlight several significant contributions to the fundamental science of ceramics for extreme environments. Emphasis will be on synthesis methods that can be used to produce high-quality ceramics for measurement of intrinsic properties. Examples will include reactions at ceramic-metal interfaces that can be used to produce dense cermets, synthesis of zirconium diboride from elemental constituents that enabled measurement of intrinsic thermal conductivity, vacancy ordering in zirconium carbide synthesized by reactive hot pressing, and carbothermal reduction of oxides to produce high entropy ultra-high temperature carbide ceramics. The presentation will conclude with a forward-looking overview of promising future research directions.
