Advanced Characterization of Wear Resistant Steel: Anastasia July1; Luis Simoes1; C. Garcia1; 1University of Pittsburgh
The goal of this project is to correlate microstructure characterization to wear properties of various steel grades and heat treatments. The project analyzes the wear resistance properties of four steel samples: 1260 Thyssen Temple, 1809 HARDOX 500, and 15B30 under oil quenched (OQ) and water quenched (WQ) cooling. All samples undergo the same wear testing and analysis. The lowest wear depth correlates to better wear resistance as a result of various contributing factors. Samples were characterized using advanced characterization techniques of depth scanning with Renishaw Cyclone Scanner, Vickers Hardness, SEM, EBSD, and MTEX for prior austenite grain size. The resulting information of composition, wear depth, hardness, phase fractions, and grain size collectively provide a deeper understanding of microstructural factors contributing to wear behavior.
