Scope Objectives and Scope: To discuss the advances in the processing, use of novel materials, characterization, and property evaluation techniques in surface engineering using alloyed and composite materials.
Surface engineering and modification technologies are constantly advancing to meet the challenging requirements of the industry. Extensive use of surface engineering techniques is made in automobile, aerospace, oil and gas, chemical and heavy-machinery industry for providing surfaces with required wear, corrosion or thermal resistance and anti-friction properties. Existing processes of applying coatings are being constantly modified/improved as well as new coating techniques are being developed. Search for new material systems having improved properties has been a focus of intense research with efforts being made on exotic materials such as carbon nanotube composites, amorphous and nanocrystalline materials, composite and multi-layered coatings. Novel methods of characterization are being applied, which are sometimes necessary to understand the microstructure-property correlation in novel materials. Evaluation of properties of coatings such as hardness, fracture toughness and adhesion at different length scales requires use of advanced/new methods such as nanomechanical testing. Modeling studies at multi-length scales have been increasingly used to augment the knowledge where experimental studies are not possible. New applications are being sought for surface engineering techniques for repair and life enhancement of components by improving their wear or corrosion properties.

This symposium aims to capture the advances in the following areas of:
a) novel processes and techniques for application of alloyed and composite coatings
b) particle and fiber reinforced composite coatings
c) high entropy and amorphous alloy coatings
d) multi-layered and nano-composite coatings
e) chemical and corrosion resistant coatings
f) anti-friction, wear and galling resistant, thermal barrier, and hydrophobic coatings
g) multi-scale modeling of properties of coatings
h) multi-scale property evaluation and microstructure-property correlation in composite coatings
