Symposium Ultra High Performance Metals, Metal Alloys, Intermetallics, and Metal Matrix Composites for Aerospace, Defense, and Automotive Applications

Scope This symposium focuses on the research and development of novel metallic materials that show potential for significant improvements in application target properties vs. commercially available materials. Typically, ultra high performance refers to at least 50% improvement in properties of interest when compared to the current state of the art. However, research and development efforts working towards this goal will also be considered. Target properties include: room/elevated/cryogenic temperature strength; fracture toughness; fatigue strength; creep strength, corrosion resistance; resistance to tribological and environmentally assisted damage; thermal stability; weldability; formability; machinability, thermal/electrical conductivity, thermal expansion, density, etc. Ideally, presentations in this symposium will discuss implementation and transition challenges, teaming opportunities, and cost or scale-up barriers and potential solutions. Multifunctional material solutions are specifically encouraged. Proposed session topics include, but are not limited to the following metallic material systems that show promise of ultra high performance:

• High Weldability/Formability/Machinability
