Symposium Glasses and Optical Materials: Current Issues and Functional Applications
Sponsorship ACerS Glass & Optical Materials Division
Organizer(s) Qiang Fu, Corning Inc
Walter Kob, University of Montpellier
Scope This symposium provides a forum for the discussion of current issues in the science and technology of glasses and optical materials, including fundamental and applied glass science, novel glass synthesis and characterization methods, and structure-processing-property relations of optical materials along with their applications.

Contributions from academia, national laboratories, and industries addressing recent advances and new applications are welcome. This symposium includes the ACerS GOMD Alfred R. Cooper Award session and it is sponsored by the ACerS Glass & Optical Materials Division.

• Proposed topics include (but are not limited to):
• Novel optical materials;
• Advances in characterization (structural, thermal, etc.) of glass and optical materials;
• Atomistic computer simulations of glass structures, properties, and processing;
• Machine learning, big data, and material genome studies and applications;
• Glass–environment interactions;
• Novel formulations and synthetic routes for formation of glasses, amorphous materials, and glass-ceramics;
• Bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics;
• Functional photonic devices;
• Chalcogenide, fluoride, and other non-oxide or mixed oxide glasses;
• Mechanics and strengthening mechanism of glass and glass-ceramics;
• Industrial glass processing, melting, fining, heat-treating, and engineering; and
• Teaching or outreach efforts related to glass science and optical properties.
• Glass Under Extreme Conditions
• Optical Fibers and Waveguides
• Additive Manufacturing of Glass
