Meeting 2014 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium A Lifetime of Experience with Titanium Alloys: An SMD Symposium in Honor of Jim Williams, Mike Loretto and Rod Boyer
Sponsorship TMS Structural Materials Division
TMS: Titanium Committee
Organizer(s) Adam L Pilchak, Air Force Research Laboratory
James Larsen, Air Force Research Laboratory
David Dye, Imperial College London
Jay Tiley, Air Force Research Laboratory
Scope This symposium is being held in honor of Professors Jim Williams and Mike Loretto and Mr. Rod Boyer. The successful and widespread industrial use of titanium alloys may be traced in large part to the significant contributions these gentlemen have made to the field of titanium metallurgy. Their careers spanned several decades in academia and industry where they served as mentors, organizers, advisors, managers, distinguished fellows, directors, and presidents. They have contributed greatly to the literature, collectively authoring hundreds of articles in technical journals and reports. In addition, they have authored several texts and edited conference proceedings and handbooks. The first talk of each morning in this three day, six session symposium will feature an invited speaker highlighting the lifetime and achievements of each honoree and recalling their experiences and interactions with them. Their research interests spanned a broad range of topics and abstracts will be sought in the following areas:
- alloy and process development
- processing-microstructure and microstructure-property relationships
- characterization of phase transformation via electron microscopy techniques
- functionally graded titanium alloy components
- net and near-net shape components for aerospace applications
- gamma titanium alloys
- fatigue, fracture and creep behavior
- correlations between microstructure and fracture behavior
- environmental effects, notably stress corrosion cracking
Abstracts Due 07/15/2013
Proceedings Plan Planned: A print-only volume
