Scope Sustainable development is globally recognized as a key issue for the future growth and well being of our society. Some of the key challenges are, (a) population growth, (b) huge amount of waste which must be disposed in landfills, (c) the rapid usage and depletion of natural resources and environment (fossil fuels, minerals, water scarcity etc.), (d) declining infrastructure, (e) extraordinary amount of carbon dioxide emissions, and (f) climate change, among others. Therefore, “green” or environmentally benign technologies have been a major focus of study by materials scientists and engineers worldwide. Generally two issues are important in this area. One is to avoid unnecessary use and generation of compounds directly hazardous to human health and the environment, such as heavy metals and organic pollutants. The other is to protect the global environment by reducing energy consumption and conserving natural resources during fabrication and manufacturing processes. The volumes of consumed raw materials, used energy (or emitted carbon dioxide), and disposed wastes are indicative of sustainability of the process and must be minimized.

Keeping these critical aspects in view, this international symposium deals with a variety of green and sustainable technologies related to materials manufacturing and processing, that are industrially feasible. Topics to be discussed in this symposium include environmental impact of materials including products and processes; development of alternative technologies; waste minimization technologies; and development of instrumentation and control systems. Topics will also include the identification of green manufacturing opportunities and/or up-front solutions to environmental problems in these or related processes as well as recent initiatives and developments in education in “green engineering and sustainability.”
