Scope Joining is an essential element in manufacturing complex structures and products - from custom products such as aircrafts, ships and medical devices to high volume products such as automobiles, appliances and micro-electronics devices. Current trends in joining are: (a) using more advanced techniques to weld new materials; (b) creating lightweight or tailored structures with dissimilar materials; and (c) requiring predictable and improved welding or joining methods for better assembly. We are hence inviting researchers from academia, government and industry to share the advances and innovations in the field of joining. The symposium will consist of paper presentations and/or panel discussions. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Advanced joining technologies including solid-state welding (e.g. friction stir welding, ultrasonic welding, magnetic pulse welding) and mechanical joining for dissimilar materials (including composites, metals, and ceramics), creating gradient structures, or micro-/nano- processes.
Joining and assembly process modeling, including non-conventional numerical and simulation methods, such as Eulerian, coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian, meshfree methods, and integrated rigid-elastic-plastic assembly models;
Modeling for joint/weld performance, such as static or dynamic machinal performance, corrosion performance, life time prediction, etc.
