About this Symposium
Meeting 2023 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Aluminum Industry Emissions Measurement, Reporting & Reduction
Sponsorship TMS Light Metals Division
TMS: Aluminum Committee
Organizer(s) Pernelle Nunez, International Aluminium Institute
Scope The aluminum industry emits 1.1 billion tons of CO2e per year. Decarbonization of the sector remains a significant challenge. Reducing all GHG emissions has been a long-held ambition for the sector. PFC emissions in particular have been reduced significantly in recent decades due to better process controls, measurement and technological advances.

This symposium will look at the ways emissions from primary aluminium production processes are measured and reported with the ultimate aim of overall reduction.

Paper are welcome on:
GHG estimates or life cycle analysis
Decarbonization pathways
Key technologies, processes or mechanisms that can reduce emissions
Total PFC measurement, reporting and reduction efforts

Abstracts Due 07/17/2022
Proceedings Plan Planned: Light Metals
PRESENTATIONS APPROVED FOR THIS SYMPOSIUM INCLUDE

Characterization of Industrial Hydrocarbon Samples from Anode Baking Furnace Off-gas Treatment Facility
Determination of PFC with Canister Sampling and Medusa GC-MS Analysis in Comparison to General IPCC Estimation Methods
Heavy Metal Emissions through Dust from Aluminium Electrolysis
Individual Pot Sampling for Low-voltage PFC Emissions Characterization and Reduction
Reaching Zero Carbon Emissions in Aluminium Electrolysis
Verification of Open-path Dust Laser for Continuous Monitoring of Diffuse Emissions
