Symposium Glasses, Optical Materials, and Devices: Current Issues in Science & Technology

Scope This symposium provides a forum for the exchange and discussion of current issues in the science and technology of glasses and optical materials. The symposium will cover recent theoretical and experimental advances in fundamental and applied glass sciences, novel glass synthesis and characterization methods, and structure-processing-properties relations of optical materials and devices. The symposium will also provide a forum to a broader audience for emerging technological applications of materials spanning over disorder-order structural spectrum. Examples of topics of interest include advanced structural characterizations of glasses, glass transition and relaxation, atomistic scale simulations of glasses, structure-property relations, new functionalities and novel applications of glasses and amorphous materials. All contributions from academia, national laboratories, and industries that address recent advances and new applications are welcome. This symposium includes the ACerS GOMD Alfred R. Cooper Award session and it is endorsed by the ACerS Glass & Optical Materials Division, Nuclear & Environmental Technology Division, and Basic Science Division.

- Novel glass formulations and synthetic routes for glass and amorphous materials formation
- Characterization and spectroscopy of a wide range (e.g., metallic, polymer, and inorganic) of glasses
- Bioglasses and bioactive optical materials
- Clusters, nanoparticles, nanostructures in glasses and optical materials
- Novel optical materials for new functionalities
- Glass thin films and functional photonic devices
- Chalcogenide and non-oxide glasses
- New optical applications
