Scope |
Thermal shock resistant ceramics and composites are used in a variety of high temperature and ultra-high temperature applications ranging from refractory materials for foundries to thermal protection systems in space vehicles. Sudden changes in temperature induce thermal stresses in the material which in-turn can initiate microcracks leading to catastrophic failures. Fracture toughness, thermal stability, and thermal expansion mismatch between the matrix and reinforcements are the important parameters adding to the complexity of the problem. This symposium will focus on thermal stability and shock resistance of ceramics and composites. Topics include but not limited to the following:
1- Development of advanced ceramics and composites with high thermal shock resistance
2- Development of thermal shock resistance evaluation methods and equipment
3- Mechanisms of thermal shock failure
4- Computational modeling of thermal stresses in ceramics and composites |
