Scope |
The Education and Professional Development Council of the American Ceramic Society and the Education Committee of TMS present this symposium to provide an opportunity for future and new faculty members to develop both their technical and “soft skills.” Major topics will include mentorship, teaching, grant writing and management, communication, and developing long-term career goals. Senior faculty and emerging junior faculty leaders will discuss best practices and lessons learned. Both research-intensive and teaching-intensive programs will be discussed. Contributions in any of the following areas (or related topics) are of interest:

- How to mentor students
Teaching Skills
- Class design
- How to write a syllabus
- Teaching to a diverse audience and different learning styles
Networking and Grant writing
- Society involvement and opportunities
- International collaboration

- Advocacy and negotiation: salary, student funding, representation

- Best advising practices
Developing long-term career goals
- How to set up a lab, a safety culture, a positive group culture
- Budgeting skills
