||G-13: A First-order Liquid-liquid Phase Transition in Undercooled Molten Pd-Ni-P Alloys

Recently, a metastable liquid miscibility gap (MLMG) was determined in undercooled molten Pd-Ni-P . Within the MLMG, a homogeneous liquid undergoes spinodal decomposition, splitting into two distinct liquids with different short-range orders, denoted by i-SRO and ℓ-SRO . In this work, a transition from i-SRO to ℓ-SRO was observed outside the MLMG. The transformation was studied in detail by TEM, X-ray and DSC methods. The experiments established that it is a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLT) or polyamorphic transition. More importantly, it was established that the observed LLT is a first-order phase transition.
