||Removal of Non-metallic Inclusions from Molten Steel Using a High Frequency Magnetic Field

The removal of non-metallic inclusions from molten steel was carried out in the laboratory using a high frequency magnetic field. It was found that over 91% of the inclusions were transported to the skin depth (2.31 mm) of the molten steel. Three-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) field and fluid flow simulations were performed and the calculation of inclusion removal agreed well with the experimental observations. The separation mechanisms of inclusions from the molten steel by the high frequency EM field are discussed. The frequency, coil current and size of inclusions had a great influence on the removal of inclusions. A 20 kHz frequency and a 400-500 A coil current were essential to efficiently remove inclusions less than 10μm in size from the molten steel.
