||3D Microstructural Characterization of Polymer and Ceramic Matrix Composite Materials (PMC, CMC) Using Serial Sectioning

The structure and properties of polymers are becoming increasingly important as they are used in structural applications, both on their own and in polymer matrix composites (PMCs). Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) have the potential to enable the next generation of high speed hypersonic vehicles and/or significant improvements in gas turbine engine performance. Three-dimensional characterization of microstructural features such as size, shape and distribution of matrix materials, strengthening fibers, and porosity provides us with geometrical measurements of features directly in CMCs and PMCs. Robo-Met.3D is a fully automated serial sectioning system that generates two-dimensional optical microstructural data for three dimensional reconstructions. The serial sectioning analysis of a CMC Hi-Nicalon-S partially densified preform, with a BN fiber coating and a SiC overcoat, and a fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite is described here.
