||O-20: Fabrication of Nb-Si-B Alloys by Solidification Process and SPS Process

Microstructural examination of the Nb-Si-B alloys at Nb-rich compositions was performed. For the preparation of Nb-Si-B alloys, two methods were used: arc melting-solidification process, and spark plasma sintering(SPS) process. With the arc melting-solidification process 13 samples were prepared. Systematic microstructural examination was performed with compositions varied in the range of 58 to 94at%Nb, the ratio of Si to B being 2. 3 samples were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process using T2 and Nb powders. SPS was performed at 1300℃ and 1400℃, depending on the composition, under 30MPa for 600s, to produce disc-shaped specimen with 15mm in diameter and 3mm high.
Optical microscopy, SEM-EDS, and XRD analysis were performed. Hardness tests (Rockwell A-scale and micro Vickers) were carried out to estimate the mechanical property.
Conclusively the samples prepared by the two processes could be compared as to which process can provide the more favorable microstructure and hardness value.
