Abstract Scope While 3D printing provides an exciting pathway to novel lattice-based components, significant discrepancies can exist between the prescribed and as-printed strut geometries, making it often impossible to predict component response using conventional approaches and the prescribed geometry. Extensive geometric (e.g., CT scans) and mechanical characterization of individual struts, multi-strut intersections (nodes), and multi-node ‘cells’, including the effective cross-sectional shape of struts, surface roughness, tension tests of struts, and compressive response of nodes and cells will be presented. These results demonstrate that millimeter strut geometry can vary significantly as the orientation of the strut changes relative to the build direction, with concomitant differences in mechanical response. Significant anisotropy can exist for nominally isotropic cells due to process variations inherent in EBM printing. Further, this “orientation- dependence” of the struts varies as a function of absolute strut size, as well as position of the strut relative to the build volume.
