||Permeability Prediction of Dendrite Structure by Large-scale Phase-field Lattice Boltzmann Simulation

Permeability of interdendritic liquid flow through dendrite structures is important for the macroscopic simulation of casting process. In the last fifty years, many experimental and computational investigations to measure the permeability have been performed. However, a conclusive permeability prediction method has not been developed yet. In this study, we propose an accurate permeability prediction method by the large-scale simulation, where the solidification microstructure consisting of multiple dendrites is expressed by the phase-field method and the permeability is computed by simulating the interdendritic liquid flow by the lattice Boltzmann method. Advantages of this method are that we can use the regular structured grids for both phase-field and lattice Boltzmann simulations and that we can compute an accurate permeability for the realistic dendrite structure consisting of multiple dendrites.
