Reliable thermodynamic descriptions for the Nd-Fe-B-C metal and Nd2O3-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3 oxide systems are essential for the optimization of the process of recycling rare earth elements from the EoL magnet scraps. Phase relations of the carbon-saturated Nd-Fe-B metal systems were first determined experimentally. Based on the present determined carbon solubilities and the data available in the literature, a thermodynamic description of the Nd-Fe-B-C system has been set up. For the Nd2O3-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3 oxide system, special designed equilibrium experiments were carried out for the quantitative determination of the phase relations and compositions at given temperatures by the EPMA-WDS, XRD and EBSD techniques. Gibbs energies of the liquid oxide phases were represented by the modified quasichemical model. Other solution phases were described by the compound energy formulism. Finally, the equilibrium distribution of Nd between liquid metal and slag phases was evaluated using the assessed thermodynamic properties.
