Benefits of alloying Sc with aluminum resulting from the precipitation of coherent Al3Sc dispersoids, including refined microstructure and increased strength, have been demonstrated for the 1xxx, 3xxx, 5xxxx and 7xxx alloy systems. Historically interactions between Sc and Si have limited the benefits of Sc additions in Al-Mg-Si 6xxx alloys.
This work characterizes microstructures of as cast model alloys to elucidate interactions between Sc and Si. The Si content in the model alloys was selected to represent levels used in commercial 6xxx alloys (0.2 to 1.5wt%). Phases and compositional distributions were evaluated using various techniques including Atom Probe Tomography (APT). Hardness and conductivity were also used to assess changes in the microstructure.
Novel approaches that optimize the precipitation of fine coherent Sc-containing dispersoids were developed. The structure and composition of these dispersoids, which will be used to strengthen and control grain structure in Al-Si-Mg (Cu) alloys, will be discussed.
