||Dynamical Diffraction Simulation and Dictionary Indexing of Quasicrystals

Quasicrystals are ordered structures that lack translational symmetry and have garnered a lot of attention in the past. Their mathematical description relies on projection of a higher dimensional lattice onto certain special hyperplanes. These structures are known to show very sharp diffraction peaks. Recently, Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) measurements have been made on quasicrystals revealing the characteristic five-fold symmetry. However, there are no commercial solutions available for indexing these patterns. In this contribution, we will describe a forward model based on dynamical diffraction theory for quasicrystals in the backscatter geometry. The forward model will be validated against real experimental Electron Backscatter Diffraction Patterns (EBSPs). This forward model, together with a uniform sampling of the orientation space for icosahedral symmetry, will be used to formulate the dictionary indexing approach for EBSD patterns arising from quasicrystals. The method will be tested on both model and experimental datasets.
