||Anisotropic Dense Bulk MnBi Magnets with High Magnetic Performance

Low-temperature phase (LTP) MnBi compound is a promising rare-earth-free permanent magnetic material because of its high uniaxial magnetic anisotropy at room temperature and unusual and large positive temperature coefficient of coercivity. Its theoretical maximum energy product (BH)max is about 17 MGOe at 300 K. The highest (BH)max value of 8.4 MGOe was reported in warm compacted MnBi bulk magnet with an intrinsic coercivity of 6.2 kOe at 300 K. One of the main challenges to fabricate high performance MnBi bulk magnets is to obtain a high volume fraction of LTP MnBi with good alignment and full density. In this work, the relationship of alloy compositions and heat treatment conditions to LTP volume fraction was systematically studied. The effect of MnBi powder size, press temperature and pressure on phase components, microstructure, density and magnetic properties of warm pressed or iso-statically pressed MnBi magnets was also well studied and analyzed.
